YEAR 5 & 6 CLIMBING CLUB
Our climbing wall club started on Friday 19 January at Calder High School Climbing Wall. It was brilliant! We learned how to spot and how to edge.
What's spotting?
Spotting is basically helping out someone on the wall. One person remains at the bottom whilst one person is climbing. The person on the ground is the 'spotter' who keeps their eye on the climber constantly. If they need help with footing or if they slip, the spotter is there to guide and protect the climber.
What's edging?
Edging is simply using the inside or the outside edge of your foot to climb. You can also use the toe to climb. This is one of the simplest techniques.

This is us learning how to traverse. We also used the techniques from the week before.

2 February 2007
This week we learned how to smear, which is where you use the flat of your foot on the wall and about different hand grips. We now know what a 'crimp' and a 'half-crimp' is.
Our last session was Friday 16 February. We got to play games on the wall such as 'Hide the dinosaur' (among other things) where we had to climb up using all the techniques learned and hide toys on holds. Our partner or other groups had to go up and find them.
