The Cragg Coiners were a gang of local ruffians who people called the 'Turvin Gang'. The gang leader was called 'King' David Hartley, who lived at Bell House, high on the moors above Cragg Vale.

King David’s brother Issac was also a Coiner. He managed to escape arrest.

David and his brother Issac Hartley lived at ‘Bell House’, Cragg Vale.

	The coins in those days were called ‘Guineas’ as well as being from England they came from other countries like Spain and France. The King of England was very cross when he found out about the Coiners.
First we took eight 'gold' coins.Then we Clipped the edge.	We melted the gold.
Then we used a special die to press the coins.	look at our nine coins made from eight.

King David was arrested and hanged for Coining. He is buried in a grave at Heptonstall.
