The Cragg Coiners were a gang of local ruffians who people called the 'Turvin Gang'. The gang leader was called 'King' David Hartley, who lived at Bell House, high on the moors above Cragg Vale.
King David’s brother Issac was also a Coiner. He managed to escape arrest.

The coins in those days were called ‘Guineas’ as well as being from England they came from other countries like Spain and France. The King of England was very cross when he found out about the Coiners. |
