LUDDENDENFOOT J&I SCHOOL
HEALTH EDUCATION POLICY
Introduction
A healthy population is necessary to society. Throughout life everyone is exposed to potential health risks, individuals can minimise those risks by making informed choices, which could improve the quality of their lives and their environment. We have agreed to develop a ‘Health for Life’ education programme designed to promote a whole school environment where healthy lifestyles are evaluated and valued.
Aims
At Luddendenfoot we see Health Education as a whole school attitude.
- To create an environment where all are valued as individuals and begin to show consideration and respect for others and their contribution to school life.
- To develop a health promoting school.
- To develop self-confidence and self-esteem.
- To provide a secure, stimulating and physically attractive environment which will promote a happy caring community in which all members can develop confidence, grow, learn and develop to their full potential physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.
Broad Guidelines
- Many elements of Health Education can be taught through the subjects of the National Curriculum and by promotion through wider aspects of school life.
- As we are promoting ‘health for Life’ we need to include opportunities for involving governors, parents and the community so that what is learned at school can be supported by appropriate experiences at home and in the community.
- It is important to approach with sensitivity the relationships that exist between children and their families and to consider the influences of peer groups and the media on a child’s perception of a healthy lifestyle and those with special needs.
- Progression in learning will involve re-visiting and expanding key areas of Health Education to help encourage the gradual development of knowledge, understanding, skills and values.
- The activities will be planned for individual, group and class work, discussion between teachers and pupils and discussion between pupils, as appropriate, will also include necessary resources and classroom organisation.
- As Health Education deals with sensitive issues (bereavement, sex education, disability) it would be helpful to have ‘ground rules’ established by the children to minimise embarrassment, distress and unconsidered, unintentional disclosures.
Pupils Health Education Activities
- The pupils will cover a scheme of work taken from the books ‘Health for Life’ 1 and 2.
- The scheme of work will ensure continuity and progression throughout the school
- Whenever possible Health Education will be included in topic work. If the topic does not lend itself to the inclusion of health education the health education will be taught as a discreet subject.
Pupils Record of their Work
- Pupils will be required to record their work in different forms depending on the nature of the activity and the purpose of the record
- They will be given the opportunity to reflect on their work, and revise it as appropriate.
Recording Pupils Progress
The class teacher will be responsible for keeping an accurate record of work done to assist progression for pupils. This will be passed on to the next teacher or next school.
Implementation/Evaluation/Review
The co-ordinator will lead the teaching of Health Education within the school. She/he will be responsible for the implementation of the policy under the direction of the Headteacher. She/he will be responsible for ensuring an adequate level of resources. She/he will be responsible for the dissemination of new information on the teaching of Health Education and resources.
All staff will have a copy of the policy in their individual file. Any issues that arise from the implementation of the policy, or the teaching of health Education can be raised at staff meetings, or as part of training sessions. If it is appropriate the question can be settled immediately, or it can be held in abeyance until the due date for review of the policy. The policy will be reviewed at regular intervals as set out in the School Development Plan.
- The policy will be reviewed regularly, in line with the School Development Plan.
- All staff, Governors and School Council will be included in the procedure.
- The views of parents will be sought.
