Physical Education Policy

Rationale

All pupils are entitled to a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated programme of physical education within the National Curriculum. Physical Education contributes to all round physical development through physical activity; aiming to maximise the potential of all children, especially in terms of strength, stamina, suppleness, agility, speed, co-ordination & control, artistic and aesthetic understanding and a feeling of well being. Providing a differentiated approach allows children to work at and achieve success at their own pace and level, contributing towards their self esteem.

Aims

Our school aims are:

Teaching and learning methods

Children will be taught in mixed age groups, either as a whole group, or in smaller groups, or individually, as appropriate.  A variety of teaching styles will be used and efforts will be made to ensure that the activities planned suit all the children’s interests and abilities.

Children will be encouraged to take part in a variety of inter-school competitions and extra-curricular clubs (holiday activities and local authority run schemes) in order to develop their team spirit and enthusiasm for physical activity.

Planning

We will follow the programmes of study and use the QCA scheme of work to ensure that our children are experiencing a full range of activities.  Val Sabin schemes of work are available to support staff in the delivery of P.E. Children will be encouraged to take part in all activities whenever possible, and each individual will be helped to develop their skills at their own level.

General organisation and safety

Clothing and equipment

All children must change for every lesson.

Appropriate dress is:

Changing facilities at KS1 are within the classroom.  At KS2 boys and girls may change separately if they wish by using the classroom and cloakroom.  In Class 5 we are able to provide separate facilities for boys and girls utilising the resources room which is adjacent to the classroom.

All children should have a pump bag in which to keep their PE kit.  All clothing and footwear should be clearly labelled with the child’s name.

We will provide swimming lessons for a minimum of 2 years to enable children to swim a minimum of 25 metres and on swimming day’s children will bring a suitable costume and a towel in a small bag.  A letter must be brought if a child is not going swimming.  Long term non-swimmers will need a doctor’s note.

Safety

All teachers should be familiar with the Local Authority Advice Regulations concerning PE.  BAALPE Booklet Safe Practise in Physical Education.  This is in the staff room cupboard.  Safety standards should be established relevant to dress and apparatus handling.

Teachers should consider what they themselves are wearing – particularly on their feet.  Teachers should be aware of any children with medical problems (e.g. hay fever, asthma, epilepsy).

Children should work quietly to aid concentration and safety.

Resources

All teachers and children should know how to handle and use all equipment safely – both indoors and outdoors.  Storage spaces should be adhered to by everyone thus allowing easy access during use.  Containers of small equipment will always be available and should be checked after use – particularly after use outside in the playground or field.

Equipment will be checked for safety by a suitable agency each year.  At present Metrogym carries out this check.

Resources are to be kept centrally and it will be the responsibility of all members of staff to ensure their safe return and report any loss/damage to the PE co-ordinator.

Equality of opportunity

All teaching and learning situations will take account of the range of abilities and the age range of the children within the class.

Those children who have a particular aptitude for one or more aspects of PE will be encouraged to take up Out of School Clubs where coaching is done by fully qualified instructors.

Special needs

All children will be actively encouraged to fully participate in PE lessons.  Those with physical disabilities will be guided to fulfil their potential in a sympathetic way.

Cultural issues

Children will be made aware of different cultures in their dance.  Teachers will use music from around the world to encourage the children to understand how people in different places enjoy physical activity.

Assessment and recording

The assessment of physical education will have two main purposes:

Assessment is seen as an ongoing process and teachers should use the end of key stage statements to record children’s achievements. The expectations form the QCA schemes of work will be used and these will be kept by the teacher in their assessment folders.

Role of Co-ordinator

The co-ordinator will ensure that all resources are well maintained and stored safely.  He or she will also ensure that staff are made aware of any relevant courses or new information as they become available, particularly with regards to safety issues.

Review

The policy will be reviewed biannually by the subject co-ordinator in consultation with the staff and Headteacher.
