Luddendenfoot J&I School
Sex Education Policy
Introduction
It is important that as children grow up, they come to an understanding of their own bodies, instincts and feelings. At Luddendenfoot we will provide sex education as part of a structured health education scheme “Health for Life”.
Aims
Our sex education programme will aim to:
- Prepare pupils to cope with the physical and emotional challenges of growing up and give them an elementary understanding of human reproduction.
- Play an important part in promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils.
Broad guidelines for the implementation of the policy
- The “Health for Life” programme will be taught throughout the school, along with other schemes.
- Children in years 5 and 6 will continue to learn about their physical and emotional changes. The programme will be appropriate to the pupil’s age, maturity and experience. Smaller teaching groups may be made where appropriate.
- As part of this unit of study they will learn that the changes that they can expect are due to a preparation for adulthood and human reproduction.
- They will gain an elementary understanding of the process of human reproduction.
- At this time extra resources, in the form of a video and leaflets, provided by Calderdale Healthcare Trust, will be used. Our school nurse will be invited to assist with the delivery of this unit.
- Parents will have access to all relevant teaching materials before they are introduced to the class.
- Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the sex education programme.
- Pupil’s questions will be answered sensitively: due consideration will be given to any particular religious or cultural factors.
