The Yorkshire Sculpture Park was blooming lovely

The totem pole

told the story of a Native American legened.

A tribe who lived near a great forest and lake, near what is now the Canadian coast, relied on fishing to feed themselves.

They began to notice that there were fewer and fewer fish in the lake, and they were begining to starve.

They discovered that a huge killer whale had come to live in their lake, and was eating all the fish.

As they were peacful people, they had no weapons with which to kill the whale, so they did the only thing they could in such a crisis- they prayed to their gods to send help so that they would not all die.

Suddenly, the sky began to grow dark and, looking up,they saw a vast eagle flying above them,so great that one of it's wings would dwarf there longboats.

The eagle flew over the forest, over the village, over the lake-then it swooped and seized the whale in it's tremendous talons and carried it away.

When the eagle was over the sea it released it's pray, which fell into the ocean.

the tribespeople were saved, and the great hump of the whales body became an island which can be still seen today.
